Edward M. Kennedy

A LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO MASSACHUSETTS

Democratic National Convention 2004

Senator Kennedy and Mayor Menino secured the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston by raising nearly $60 million in private funding.  This was the first post-September 11th convention as well as the first national political convention in the city’s history.  Senator Kennedy obtained $50 million in federal funding to cover local security expenses associated with it.  The Convention attracted nearly 40,000 visitors to Boston and gave the city and region international exposure as well as producing over $173 million in direct financial benefits to Boston and the Commonwealth.

“Senator Kennendy is the heart and soul of the Democratic Party, especially here in Massachusetts.” – John Walsh, Massachusetts Democratic Party chairman (Boston Herald, Dems honor senator with ‘Tedstrong’ wristbands. Hillary Chabot, 6/6/08).
